PowerLogix 1 GHz : retiré de la vente

Powerlogix vient de retirer son upgrade 750 GX à 1GHz, pour le remplacer par un 750GX à 900 MHz.
La raison : trop de consommation de courant, IBM ayant augmenter la tension du noyau pour obtenir l'augmentation de fréquence.

Donc, les "heureux" possesseurs de 1GHz ont probablement un début de "collector" !!!!
En espérant que ce collector ne tue pas l'autonomie de la batterie ni ne chauffe de trop.

I placed my order on 4/6, finally realized I was not getting any kind of shipping container and sent it in 4/22 and now after various reports and call-ins I found out yesterday the 1ghz upgrade is no longer.
It appears Powerlogix decided to announce & sell the product before doing much testing and has now found out the 1ghz gx chip is just too hot for the Pismo enclosure to run reliably.
Basically, I've been without my notebook for over a month for absolutely nothing. I imagine others are in the same, if not possibly worse, spot. For quality control purposes, apparently few if any have shipped.
Now I've been told Powerlogix will offer a 900mhz G3-GX upgrade (for $369 instead of $399 for the 1ghz) and they are just entering (what should be a smooth) testing phase for the 900mhz chip. This version should be ready in 2 weeks time. From product announcement to retraction to shipping will be two months.
This is a horrific display of logistics and product management that reflects very poorly on Powerlogix' professionalism and capability.

I wrote the president of Powerlogix for comments on this but checking the current Powerlogix Bluechip G3 product page does show 900MHz as the top speed available now. The 1GHz G3 Pismo upgrade was originally mentioned in this April 5th, 2004 PL press release.
Update - here's PL's comments on why the 1GHz 750GX Bluechip model was cancelled:


" Based on new information from IBM, published 5/20/04, concerning the power demands of the GX vs the FX.
Essentially they revised their power figures, and we performed tests that confirmed things.
The increase from 900 to 1 GHz on a 750GX results in about a 25% increase in power draw, taking things to a level beyond what the Pismo can adequately handle.

(I asked if they boosted the voltage on the 1GHz part - looking at the specs doc above shows the 933MHz and 1GHz GX CPUs are now a 1.5v part, where the lower speed (800MHz) and FX CPUs are listed as 1.45V nominal.)
None of our test CPUs exhibited this, we have had 1gig Pismos for several months, but the production chips had to have a core voltage boost to hit 1gig, which results in the increased power demands.
Essentially IBM's yield on the 1gig part has been lower than they expected. I suspect they have initiated this core voltage bump to get chips up to 1gig, but they had to warn customers about the additional power demands.
These will ship at 900 MHz, and at a price only $20 higher than the FX 900 with half the L2. (750GX has 1MB L2, FX has 512KB)

He also mentioned that OWC is testing a CPU Card slot version of the 1GHz 750GX upgrade for legacy PCI Macs. He also commented that quality has been improved since they brought production control back in-house.

Je reposte le courrier que j'ai reçu d'un certain Bill Noll de Powerlogix, faisant partie des clients ayant commandé le PPC 750 GX @ 1 Ghz sans jamais avoir eu de nouvelles de mon suivi de commande.

Un des derniers paragraphes — celui que j'ai mis en gras — ne me paraît pas clair, et rien n'est indiqué sur le site de la boutique Powerlogix : le colis pré adressé ne serait plus envoyé pour ceux comme moi qui ont fait une première commande du GX @ 1 Ghz, mais quand on repasse une commande pour le GX @ 900 Mhz, on peut choisir son mode d'expédition par Fedex ou UPS en plus de l'assurance.
Pourquoi ne pas simplement modifier la première commande ?

As you know, our BlueChip upgrade is based on IBM's latest addition to the
32-bit PowerPC family, the highly anticipated PowerPC 750GX microprocessor.
Featuring a fully integrated 1MB Level 2 cache, the 750GX promises
performance far surpassing the original G3 400 or 500 MHz processors.

Although there's no argument about the processor's sheer speed, the higher
frequency comes at a price. Unfortunately, our engineering department has
determined that running at the maximum 1.0 GHz speed with maximum load for
an extended period generates too much heat for the Pismo PowerBook design.

This conclusion is a result of extensive testing over the past two weeks as
well as revised engineering specifications of the 750GX published by IBM on

Although we're obviously disappointed the Pismo PowerBook can't handle the
1.0 GHz load, we've confirmed when the processor is reduced to 900 MHz, the
Pismo PowerBook can easily provide sufficient heat dissipation.

Although this sounds like an insignificant reduction in speed, it is a major
reduction in heat. The relationship between the two is exponential, not
linear. In other words, the last 10% of clock speed increases heat (and
power consumption) approximately 25%, overtaxing the Pismo's power supply
and cooling capabilities.

Based on these results, we've decided to release the BlueChip 750 GX at 900
MHz. The cache size - a significant criteria for performance - remains at
1MB at 900 MHz - a 1:1 ratio with the processor. Even at our more
conservative rating, the PowerLogix BlueChip remains the fastest available
upgrade for your Apple PowerBook.

We've reduced the price of the BlueChip by 30.00 to reflect the new clock
speed. This is only 20.00 more then our BlueChip 750FX upgrade with half the
level 2 cache size.

Our production facility is now fully up to speed, so we can now accept your
order. We currently have orders booked through June 8th.

If possible, your processor should arrive in our facility between June 9th
and June 16th. Please email me directly if these dates are not acceptable to
you and I will reschedule your production to minimize downtime.
